Event Introduction
Theatresports™, created by Keith Johnstone, is a creative combination of improvisation theatre and sports competition. Teams of improvisers compete against each other for points on stage. At the end of the evening, points are tallied to determine the champion of the show.
To earn points, teams challenge each other to a TheatreSports™ performance game, such as "Hat Game", "Three words at a Time", "Song", etc and perform scenes in accordance to the rules of the game based on audience suggestions. In addition to being a test of participants' improvisation skills, Theatresports™ puts to test participants' spontaneousness, creativity and team work skills too. As the audience cheer for their prefered teams, the atmosphere in the theatre is transformed into one that is similar to a sports competition.
Theatresports™ is a popular theatre form in countries in America, Europe, Australia and Japan. Besides being embraced by the student population in the various countries, television shows modified from Theatresports™ is not uncommon too, with Whose Line is it Anyway as one of the most prominent examples.
Mr Jacky Li Chun Kit's introduction of this particular form of theatre to the Macau audience in year 2001 marks the official entry of TheatreSports™ into the Chinese theatre scene. Since then, Jacky remains active in the promotion of TheatreSports™ in neighbouring Chinese-speaking regions, including Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore.
This year, with Jacky as the instructor, Dunman High School is going to stage the second National TheatreSports™ competition in Singapore. A one-week workshop will be held for secondary and junior college students before they are put on stage for the competition. With these energetic youths presenting TheatreSports formally at the Lee Foundation Theatre, Singaporeans can finally experience for themselves the electrifying atmosphere of an improvisational theatre.
